Research - Intertextuality

 

Our music video, so far has been planned for us to have the establishing shot in a bedroom, we wanted to include intertextuality in the music video so we Googled famous bedrooms from movies and we found these ones from 'Amilie' 'Clueless' and 'The Virgin Suicides'. These are the bedrooms we found that it would be easiest to recreate with a small budget. Even if we can't get these set outs exact they would make a nice aesthetic.

Another way we could add intertextuality into the music video is when we take the shot to the 'dream world' is we are planning to go through the wardrobe door like in Narnia, we are going to go through the wardrobe in a bedroom through to a woodland area in Barton.

Research - Group Post: Institutions: Music channels

Joe's post on music channels as an institution is really good. He has included a lot of facts and statistics and made the post really informative.

Joe said - "The one negative aspects of music channels is that for new artists it is nearly impossible for a new band to try and get their promo videos onto these channels, after doing some research the only way I could see to get on these channels is to be signed to a label and they get it on the channel. being signed to a label can take many years making it impractical for new artists to try going through this route."


How this research has influenced my planning

Networks still have a vast music video library on their website, so submitting a video for consideration is still a practical and viable way to gain exposure for your music but before sending your video off to channels, you will need to prepare a proper submission package, it is really difficult for artists to get their videos on music channels without a manager or a record label so I don't think this is viable just yet.

Research - Group Post: Institutions : Youtube

I feel like Youtube is the best way to be able to distribute a new song. It is free to upload videos and any one is able to put their videos on Youtube. If people are listening to songs that are  similar to the one that you have uploaded, your video may be featured in their 'suggested for you' or 'similar to this' sections which is helpful promotion. Views on Youtube  also mean  that you can get paid, many artists like Justin Bieber have been discovered through their Youtube channels.

Joe - "From statistics, we can see how the creators of YouTube have built their site to have the most reach possible and allow a single a video to reach millions of people at a time. Releasing a music video on You Tube makes a lot of sense from the points made above as well as the fact that when a video reaches around 1 million views it becomes added to the front page of the website and becomes a recommended video for people to see. Music videos on YouTube do have a very high success rate with music videos like“Gangnam style” racking up 2.6 million views as of July 26. YouTube is a site with a huge TA as there is something on this site for everyone from hair tutorials to death metal meaning anyone can use it, launching a stars career on YouTube would be a good move as there are billions of people on the site meaning the video would be seen at some point."
How this research has influenced my planning
I feel like Youtube would be a really great way to first get our music video out into the public, if the video got a lot of views and ended  up being popular then we could sell it to iTunes also.

Joe Shepherd A2 Media Music Video : Institutions: ITunes

Over the summer Joe did some institutions research, I feel like iTunes is a really good and effective way for new and upcoming artists to get their music out and into a place where it can be advertised. It is free to get your music put on iTunes and it is also a great way to make a profit and build up an audience.

How this research has influenced my planning
I feel like iTunes is a really good way of advertising and distributing our music, however it is rare that people actually buy the music video on iTunes, it is mainly just the song so I feel like uploading the video to Youtube first and then if it proves popular, uploading to iTunes would be more effective.

Research - Group Post on Goodwin

Performance, concept & narrative music videos from Jshepherd1460

Goodwin explores the idea that music videos fall into three categories, Performance, Narrative or Concept. He highlights the conventions of each in his theory.
Performance - Performance shots, singing into camera, location shots, usually used to promote an artist.


Narrative - Tells a story to the audience, lyrics and visual matches, usually fast paced with a lot of shot types.


Concept - usually built around a single idea, surreal ideas often features, anything can happen in concept based videos.

This has helped me realise that I think narrative based music videos are so much more effective to the audience and this is the  kind of music video I would prefer to make, however I think that concept  is also very important, especially if we are making  a 'dream-like' world in our music video.

Planning - Make-Up and Special FX Make-Up

Since the song we have chosen is called "Dreams" we figured that we could make this a very outlandish and whimsical so we are going to use bold and bright make up, using a lot of glitter. We are also going to use Special FX make-up to really make the dreamlike feel more prominent. We have been discussing possible ideas for make-up and costumes but we need to remember that we have a budget to stick to and we won't be able to have severely outrageous costumes like Lady GaGa as it is just not in our budget.

We looked online at make up and fx make up and found some possible inspiration...

The lobster hands from American Horror Story are a weird but simple way to capture the essence of a dream based world, this can be achieved by simply taping the fingers together, covering with scar wax and blending. Scar wax is a cheap product and should fit well within the budget.

Another image we found as inspiration looks rather gory on the actual photo but instead of using fake blood to fill the joker style Chelsea grin, we are going to use glitter to make it less Halloween and more whimsical. This can also be made with scar wax, or could be made with liquid latex and tissue which I already have.

This is the kind of eye make-up I imagined that the extras would have in the music video, something bright and glittery to add the dream like feel but nothing too crazy to distract from the main characters in the story whos make-up will be more intense and crazy.

Planning - Changing Our Song with lyrics

The song we were originally planning to use was an original song by a local band however upon reflection, it would be significantly difficult to arrange multiple days and times when we could get all five members of the band together at the same time as we will need various different shots in different locations and we will also need photo-shoots for the digipak we would have to create also. At the end of this we have had a group discussion and decided to use the song 'Dreams' by Bastille and Gabrielle Aplin, this song is a cover of a classic Fleetwood Mac record, this we feel would not only appeal to our previously intended audience (indie) but may also widen the target audience age range. Joe has already emailed Warner Brothers to ask for copyright permission.
